We’re walking the Camino de Santiago in June 2022. Come along with us!

Packing light (?)

There are about a million packing lists for the Camino online, and that may be understating it. They’re all pretty much the same, with variants for the route and the season. A couple changes of clothes, a backup pair of shoes, as few toiletries as you can get away with.

Here are my clothes for the next three weeks. Plus one nervous pooch not invited on the trip.

Reader, does it surprise you that I packed very few clothes but a whole bunch of toiletries?

My clothes fit into a 10L stuff sack, shown next to a 20-lb dog for comparison. The dog weighs considerably more.
They say you pack your fears on the Camino, and that’s what was going through my mind when I packed foot care, first aid, Advil, Tums, and emergency TP kits.

We weighed our bags before we left, about 16 pounds each, although that doesn’t include the water we’ll need carrying or my Kindle which wasn’t in the bag yet. It doesn’t feel bad, honestly. But then, I’ve only schlepped my pack out the front door to the driveway and up the steps to the Castro Valley BART station, so it’s to early to tell. Maybe I’ll be able to shed some fears on the way. -Paula

My lovely, driven and compassionate friends, I wish you safe travels full of depth and experience. As you guide yourselves through your path on the Camino, I know all the things you’ll see and people you’ll meet will evoke your heart. I can’t wait for the virtual journey that I get to experience with you to begin! So, buen Camino!

  3. Pointer: Shorten hiking poles when going uphill and lengthen going downhill. I’m guessing it has to be the same as backpacking. There’s been several times they have saved my bottom. Have fun!

  4. Sounds like it will be an amazing experience! I’m awed by your ability to pare down your 3 week wardrobe to such a small amount of clothing. Have fun!
